Do you know a UCalgary student struggling with housing? Here’s how to help

Faculty and staff can play a vital role in connecting students to residence housing, emergency housing and off-campus support when challenges arise

Fall move-in started on Sunday, Aug. 24, and Residence Services welcomed thousands of students to campus.

Throughout the year, spaces in residence can become available due to no-shows at move-in, visa issues, or mid-term withdrawals.

“We know that finding safe, stable housing can be a challenge for students, especially in a competitive rental market,” says Brittanie Walker-Reid, director of Residence Services. “If a student is facing unsafe conditions, such as a sudden change in their rental situation, or difficulties with a landlord, there’s a good chance we can help even after the term has started.”

That support may include:

  • Residence placement: spaces often open up throughout the year
  • Emergency housing: short-term accommodation for students in urgent need
  • Off-campus housing support: dedicated help from 91 Off-Campus housing coordinator to help navigate housing challenges

“When a student reaches out in a difficult housing situation, our first priority is to make sure they feel safe and supported,” says Walker-Reid. “Sometimes we can place them in Residence right away, and if not, we’ll connect them with emergency or off-campus resources. Either way, they’ll have someone walking alongside them to help figure it out.”

Whether you are a staff or faculty member who encounters a student in need, the most important step is a quick referral. Encourage them to email housing@ucalgary.ca.

“Even one simple referral could make the difference between a student struggling to focus on their studies or having a safe, stable place to call home,” adds Walker-Reid.

As we head into another academic year, thank you for helping us ensure every student feels supported, safe and connected at UCalgary.

Please help spread the word: whether it is right before Move-in day or midway through the semester, Residence is here to help.
