Visiting scholar Paul Marx brings expertise in political inequality to New North America Initiative
The School of Public Policy is pleased to welcome Professor Paul Marx from the University of Bonn as a visiting researcher with the New North America Initiative (NNAI).
"The opportunity to combine different methodological approaches to better understand, from the bottom up, how people think about international cooperation, economic interdependence, and political solidarity in a period of growing political and economic uncertainty is particularly exciting," said Marx.
Marx has been advising the Initiative's research since early 2026, contributing to the planning, design and methodological rigor of its vision research. His expertise in political inequality, public opinion, and qualitative research methods will help strengthen NNAI's work to better understand how communities across North America think about international cooperation, economic interdependence, and shared prosperity.
"A new vision for North America cannot be developed only in boardrooms or capitals; it has to be shaped by the people who will live with its consequences," said Carlo Dade, Director of International Policy at the School of Public Policy and Director of the New North America Initiative.
A professor of political economy at the University of Bonn, Marx's research focuses on political inequality, political behavior, comparative public policy and the socio-economic consequences of technological change.
He currently leads research funded by the German Research Foundation on "The Micro and Macro Dynamics of Political Inequality." His work combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine how social inequalities shape political participation, attitudes and representation.
"I look forward to joining the New North America Initiative at the 91 School of Public Policy and contributing to its work on the future of cross-country cooperation in North America,” Marx said.
During his time in Calgary, he will also play a key role in NNAI's Colorado case study, helping design and conduct interviews and focus groups while bringing an important international perspective to the Initiative.
"Professor Marx's expertise will help us listen carefully, ask better questions, and bring those perspectives into the heart of NNAI's work,” said Dade.
