Lab Safety & Hazardous Materials Platform
Project Objective and Rationale
Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) plans to implement a new lab safety and hazardous materials platform that supports and enhances institutional safety performance.
The current Chematix platform is outdated and no longer supported. The University is transitioning to an innovative and adaptable solution to improve user experience, reduce administrative burden and better meet evolving research, teaching, operational and compliance needs.
Timeline
The project spans 3 years (July 2025-June 2028).
Phase 1
RFP Development & Award
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Gather system requirements
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Post Request for Proposal (RFP)
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Select vendor
Phase 2
Design, Data Migration & Testing
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Configure platform
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Migrate existing data
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Conduct user acceptance testing
Phase 3
Implementation & Chematix Decommissioning
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Deploy new platform
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Archive Chematix data, decommission system
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Transition to sustainment
Project Status
(as of May 2026)
•&²Ô²ú²õ±è;&²Ô²ú²õ±è; Project Charter approved and Project Kickoff held

FAQs
If you have a project-related question, contact Harisa Allamani. All questions are reviewed and selected for release when relevant based on project phase.
Project status and updates will be posted on this website. In addition, relevant information will also be shared via email, targeted and broad communications, user engagement sessions, and committees.
A new platform is expected to provide improvements to navigation, functionality and user experience. There may be some changes to current processes and how users interact with the platform, e.g. to manage chemical inventory, submit waste collection requests or maintain biosafety permits. More information on specific process changes, training and instructions, will be provided once available.
Chematix data will be archived and the Chematix platform decommissioned when the transition to the new platform is completed. Until then, users are required to continue using Chematix to manage chemical inventory, submit waste collection requests, maintain biosafety permits etc.
The go-live date and implementation timelines have not been finalized. They will be shared on this website and communicated once available.
A formal announcement will be made on this website and communicated through the established channels.
Phase 2 includes the migration of relevant, existing data from Chematix to the new platform. Data that is not migrated will be archived. For chemical inventory, the current goal is to transition data to the new platform with continued use of the existing container barcodes.
Users are required to continue using the incident management tool (OARS) until further notice. Replacing OARS is under consideration by EHS as part of a separate project.
